The<\/span> Anthropocene<\/span>, <\/span>or \u201c<\/span>the age of man,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> is a proposed<\/span> new <\/span>geological epoch<\/span>, marking the period from which human civilization has an irreversible and profound impact on <\/span>Earth\u2019<\/span>s ecosystem<\/span>s<\/span>. The beginning of the Anthropocene is most often associated with the advent of the Industrial Revolution. Some scientists <\/span>originate it<\/span> from the invention of the steam engine, while others <\/span>derive<\/span> the advent of a new era from the rise of civilizations based on agriculture. Nuclear experiments during the Second Worl<\/span>d War and the first nuclear <\/span>explosion (Trinity test) also marked a <\/span>significant leap forward in man\u2019<\/span>s becoming a geological factor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The concept was coined by ecologist Eugene F. Stoermer in the <\/span>1980s, and was widely adopted when<\/span> the<\/span> Nobel Prize winner<\/span> atmospheric chemist, <\/span>Paul <\/span>Crutzen<\/span> published his<\/span> article<\/span> The Geology of Mankind<\/span><\/i> (2002)<\/span> at the beginning of t<\/span>he 2000s<\/span>. The concept of <\/span>anthropocene<\/span> has <\/span>also <\/span>become well established in the human sciences, but the official use of the term in the field of earth<\/span>-system<\/span> sciences has not yet been accepte<\/span>d.
